On Thursday 5th February, myself and my motley crew of dedicated crime-fighting volunteers will be trapsing around Lancaster after dark to see where the streetlights are (and, more importantly, aren’t).
We’ve plotted a route based on the areas that you told us felt unsafe due to poor lighting and, along the way, we’ll be taking photos as visual evidence of places that have been highlighted as particularly problematic.
When?
Thursday 5th Feb, 6pm-late (you can drop in and out whenever suits you)
Where?
Meet at Greaves Road Spar – we’re following the route shown in blue on the map.
Why?
We hope to use these photos, alongside my big ol’ map and your contributions to it, to lobby the City Council proactively start addressing safety concerns in areas with a high concentration of students.
The route is around 5 miles of fun, so wrap up warm, wear sensible shoes, and bring snacks!
LE TOUR DE TOILET
Evidently I just really love a scavenger hunt, because the fun doesn’t finish when we all part ways at a bus stop on the 1A route on Thursday night. At 10:30am the next morning, I’ll be going on a mission to scope out every single A Floor toilet on campus to see which ones have accessible period products available.
I’ll also be shortlisting my top contenders for where free period product dispensers should be mounted, so if you want your favourite Lancaster toilet to have a chance of making that list, make sure to come along!
When?
Friday 6th Feb, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where?
Meet at LUSU – this one doesn’t have a route, we go off vibes and intuition
Why?
I need to choose exactly how many (and which) toilets I want period product dispensers to be put up in so that the university can crunch some numbers and pay for them!
