Self-certification of extensions will be implemented with a hybrid Fit to Sit policy. This means that you are able to grant yourself an extension on coursework, or defer exams in a situation where you would not be considered well enough to sit them.
This will make a huge difference to wellbeing, workload management, and for students with co-curricular activities such as sports, societies or part time jobs. In addition, it also aims to reduce exceptional circumstances, especially regarding exams.
The policy has been approved by Lancaster University’s Education Committee, of which the Education Officer is a member amongst university staff. It is a subcommittee of Senate, which is the highest level of university governance regarding educational matters. Policies and changes must pass through various committees before approval, and the Fit to Sit policy is currently going through this process, with the goal of implementing the policy in the 26/27 academic year.
Certain details such as how long you can self cert or how many times you can use the feature are currently being worked through by myself and university staff. Additionally, we are running student consultation sessions.
Additionally, considerations for certain students need to be made when developing the policy, such as for students with Inclusive Learning Support Plans (ILSPs).
If you would like to have your say on how this policy is developed (and get a FREE campus outlet food voucher) come along to our sessions:
9 February, 12.30pm–2.00pm
Bowland North, SR20
10 February, 10.30am–12.00pm
Management School, LT14
Looking forward to seeing you there!
