Safety in Lancaster: Street Lighting

Monday 22-06-2026 - 12:54

Leah Buttery has published her report on streetlighting and students’ perceptions of safety in Lancaster.

The report is the culmination of months of work to better understand where students feel unsafe, identify key thoroughfares, and present key recommendations to the local authorities.

Leah Buttery

“This is a piece of work that I am incredibly proud of, and I’m thrilled at the engagement that I have had from students over the course of the project. I hope that, as this work is carried forward, it leads to positive change in Lancaster to make the city a safer place to live and work for our students.” - Leah Buttery, LUSU Wellbeing Officer 2025/26

In the last few weeks, Leah has been sharing and discussing the report with members of Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council, and other stakeholders. We are thankful for the encouragingly positive response we have so far received.

We are now preparing more detailed proposed actions for the various authorities with responsibility for the spaces listed in the report. Later in 2026, we expect to work closely with various stakeholders to better understand the wider community’s needs and deliver real, meaningful improvements to streetlighting in Lancaster.
