Your LUSU Full Time Officers all have outstanding plan 2 student loans reflecting 3 years of study at the University of Lancaster - in the last year, their loans have each increased by over £2000 in interest alone.
In a hyper competitive graduate job market, this investment has set us up with the bare minimum box tick for employment in the UK, and will saddle us with debt which will likely only increase throughout our working lives, all while the current system doesn't even fund our universities properly.
The student loan system must change! We are pushing the Government to:
1. Reverse the freeze on student loan repayment thresholds.
2. Reform interest rates so balances do not grow faster than repayments.
3. Introduce clearer, fairer terms that don't penalise lower and middle earners.
You will have seen our Instagram post put out the other week kickstarting our support for this campaign – a simple but stark message about our own situations – and we call upon other Students’ Unions around the country to post similar to make as much noise as possible on this issue.
Leah and Rory will be joining the NUS on Wednesday 11th March in London for their National Lobby Day, where they will be meeting with our local MP, Cat Smith, to discuss the current student loan crisis, and routes forward which work for students, universities, and the country. They’re also set to attend the All Party Parliamentary Group for Students on Student Loan Interest Rates in the evening to continue those discussions with other Students’ Union Officers from around the country.
Follow along with our social media on Wednesday to keep tabs on how the day goes!
