Over the Michaelmas Term, we collaborated with the School of Computing and Communications’ academic reps in organising a Winter Ball, which took place on the 5th of December at the Beer Hall, Galgate. We wanted to host an enjoyable event where students across the school could meet and get to know each other outside of lectures.

Planning the ball was a complex but rewarding process and we made sure to consult the Students' Union and the Head of Department to figure out the logistics, marketing, and overall structure of the event. One of the biggest challenges was balancing expectations with what was realistically possible, which meant lots of communication, problem-solving, and last-minute adjustments.

On the night, we had karaoke, a raffle, and food from George's Kitchen, which really helped set the atmosphere. It was great to see lecturers turn up and join in and it made the event feel more relaxed and inclusive. The turnout and positive feedback from everyone who attended made all the planning worthwhile.

Looking back, arranging the Winter Ball taught us about teamwork, organisation, and representing students effectively. It boosted our confidence and demonstrated the impact student-led events can have on building a sense of community - we will definitely be planning more!
