LUSU Awarded Excellent at Green Impact Awards!

We’re thrilled to share that Lancaster University Students’ Union (LUSU) has just been awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating in the national Green Impact Awards - the highest possible achievement!

Green Impact is a nationwide programme run by SOS-UK that recognises and rewards sustainability efforts in universities and students’ unions. The last time we took part in the award was the 2020-21 academic year, where we achieved a ‘Good’ rating. This year, we came back stronger than ever and smashed it, scoring 344 points in our audit. This is the first time we have achieved an ‘Excellent’ award in our history!

Auditors loved our LUSU Green Adventure Programme, ECOChallenge and Sewing Repair Cafe’s. We also scored full-marks for our nature and biodiversity volunteer programme, our work on reducing fast fashion and our decolonising and decarbonising walking tour.

Thus far this academic year, LUSU Green have engaged 1342 students in our sustainability work – from volunteering sessions to workshops and events. We also have a core contingent of 252 volunteers who regularly attend our events and make change on the ground.

As well as engagement, the award also recognised our sustainable internal process and work, such as our new supplier of sportswear Akuma – which had sustainability as a key criterion for suppliers, our external carbon audit and creation of a staff sustainability group.

Scott Barker, LUSU Green Coordinator, said: “This is an incredible achievement that we’re so proud of. Jack, Anna and I have been working on this since the start of the year - pulling together all the evidence of the amazing work happening here. It’s been a long process, but a worthwhile one! Thank you to our amazing students who continue to inspire us every day."
