The Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities Committee aims to represent the interests and concerns of Black, Asian, and ethnic minority students at Lancaster University and within the Students’ Union. It fosters a community in which BAME students feel safe, heard, and empowered while leading campaigns and activities to benefit students’ well-being, social and academic experiences, and career aspirations.
Therefore, if this is something that could interest you, we would love for you to join us. To be eligible for membership, you must be a self-defining Black, Asian, or ethnic minority student and be available to meet every two weeks.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to make change together, collaborating with societies, clubs, and other student groups to put on great events and offer exciting opportunities for Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities students. Keep an eye out here too!
We are currently looking for a small group of people to help us get the committee started:
Chairperson
The primary leader of the committee. The person who is responsible and accountable for the success of the committee and its activities. The Chairperson leads the committee and chairs committee meetings.
If you are interested: you need to be able to delegate and work constructively with a range of people and personalities. You need to be willing to take the lead and be held to account if things don’t go to plan.
General Secretary
The person who makes sure it all works smoothly. The General Secretary oversees the committee’s finances and other resources, they book rooms, schedule meetings, and handle any paperwork.
If you are interested: you need to be an organised and efficient person. You need to be confident managing a budget, a schedule, and administrative processes.
Networking Officer
The link for the committee with societies, clubs and other student groups. They also make connections with other people and organisations for the benefit of the committee and students’ careers. They will lead collaborative events and activity.
If you are interested: you should be someone who loves networking and meeting new people. You need to be comfortable reaching out and building mutually beneficial relationships with others.
Editor of the Newsletter
The person who leads the discussion amongst members of the committee. They will co-ordinate the publication of a regular newsletter to all members of the committee. The Editor will be constantly looking out for valuable opportunities to share with members of the committee: placements, volunteering, and opportunities to contribute to their community.
If you are interested: you need to love communications for this role. Are you a great researcher? Are you the person in your friend group who always finds out about things first? You need to be confident to take on the management of the newsletter and ensure it goes out on time, every time.
We are also looking for:
Events Officer
The people who organise great events to bring Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities students together to network, socialize, and campaign.
Social Media Officer
The people who manage the committee’s social media accounts.
Podcast Host
We’d love to do a podcast! But we need at least 3 or 4 people who want to come together and host it!
Project Manager
We’d love to run some campaigns and projects to support the empowerment of Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities students in their university experiences, skill development, and career prospects.
