The Student Sustainability Report

Friday 27-06-2025 - 15:52

On Tuesday 20th May, students came together to share their perspectives on the University’s approach to climate action and to collaboratively generate a set of proposals for institutional change!

The report identifies the demands of Lancaster University students, during LUSU Green’s 2025 Climate Conference.

To set the scene our guest speakers Dr Mirian Calvo, Susanna Dart, Harrison Stewart, Natalie Bauer and Jack Watson discussed the climate emergency and what Lancaster University are doing about it.

LUSU Green wanted to hear students' voices, so we then broke out into world cafe discussions on themed tables covering: Food, Biodiversity and Nature, Travel and Transport, and Waste and Circular Economy. Current practice, barriers and ideas were then shared in round-table discussions, before participants voted on their top 5 favourite ideas. The top five student demands written into a report and presented to the University are as follows:

1. Expansion of Don’t Ditch It, Donate It project to be all-year round

2. More plant-based options on campus – cheap eats in every University diner

3. Sustainability induction to all new students – a module to all new students raising awareness of initiatives and schemes on campus and in town

4. More grassroots action – increased resource for Grounds Team, LUSU Green and Environmental societies

5. Rewilding campus and Forrest Hills

For full details on the student demands and key findings please read the report here.
