This new fund will help remove financial barriers that can prevent students from getting involved in sport — whether that’s joining a college team, taking part in intramural leagues, or engaging in recreational activities that support wellbeing and community.
Improving access to sport was one of my key manifesto pledges, and something I’ve been determined to deliver since starting my role as Activities Officer. Throughout the year, I’ve spoken to so many students who’ve said that the cost of passes, kit, or memberships, has stopped them from getting involved. Having experienced those same challenges myself as a student, I know how important it is that sport at Lancaster remains open to everyone.
The Sports Access Fund aims to ensure that no student is excluded from sport due to financial hardship. It represents a shared commitment between LUSU and the University to make participation more inclusive and to recognise the vital role that sport plays in student wellbeing, belonging, and community life.
Work will continue to review and strengthen the fund over time to make sure it remains sustainable and responsive to student needs in the future.
This new fund will sit alongside the existing Societies Access Fund, helping to make all areas of extracurricular life at Lancaster — from sport to student groups and societies — more accessible for everyone.
More details on how to apply for the Sports Access Fund will be shared soon via the LUSU Sport social media channels and through email.
This is a really exciting step forward in making student life at Lancaster more inclusive, and I’m proud to see it delivered in partnership with the University community.
