Humans of Lancaster is a new project sharing the wonderful work of inspiring individuals during these challenging times.
DARREN AXE
Darren Axe is one of those people who will always find a way to go the extra mile to help others. Other people, other animals or other environments. Darren is unofficially the Green Lancaster Godfather, officially, the Students’ Union Development Manager for Sustainability. The COVID-19 pandemic certainly hasn’t changed this as Darren has at every opportunity volunteered to help students, staff and Lancaster community.
In the absence many of our glorious student volunteers, Darren has stepped up to the plate and cycled up to the Forest Hills restoration site to complete necessary tree planting activities to ensure the survival of the unplanted Forest of the Future saplings. He does this simply because he cares about world we live in and has always gone above and beyond.
Despite the risks, he offered us food boxes when we couldn’t get any for students, he has been delivering food boxes to self-isolating students and offered PPE to his colleagues and volunteers to ensure everyone was working safely. He did all of this whilst re-purposing Don’t Ditch It equipment (because he’s still the Sustainability king afterall).
He set up Foodbank donation points with the Green Lancaster team across campus to ensure that food was not wasted. Whilst doing all this, he has also been ensuring our feathered ladies (rescue hens) down at the EcoHub are also well fed and watered.
He’s our Sustainability secret weapon, he’s made an outstanding contribution to the Lancaster community. The students’ union are very proud of him and we wouldn’t be the same without him.
